An Old Fashioned Name

On one of our earlier cruises, a lady spotted Maria trundling our grandson across the deck in a stroller.

“That’s a handsome young fellow. What’s his name?”

“Teddy.”

“Oh. We have a man in our traveling group named Teddy. He’s 80.”

Well, the thoroughly modern young man with the old fashioned name turns 10 tomorrow. He is looking forward to a really great Nerf gun shootout with his dad and 13 of his closest friends. Yes, they now have Nerf gun birthday parties it seems.

Teddy loves playing video games with his sisters and can tell you more than you’d ever want to know about the versions of Disney Infinity gadgets. But he also has a serious side. He’s a demon reader and great at math. He and his father put together a Raspberry Pi computer at Christmas and now he’s trying his hand at graphical structured programming. He thinks he’s “hacking Minecraft” but he’s learning something in the process.

He’s a caring older brother and he certainly has his local fans. They still like trying to whip him in Lego games though.

It won’t be long until he’s looking down on us, the way he’s sprouting up. But we are used to it.

His Uncle Serge gave him some hockey tickets, so earlier this week Teddy and his parents went to see the Senators in Kanata – his first NHL game. The Senators actually won one. So maybe he’s a good luck charm.

His personal favorite sports activity is his martial arts class. He’s a peaceful dude, but don’t cross him – or his sister for that matter!

So Mr. Edward Vincent McLean – a happy 10th birthday and many more to come.
