A Steady Hand

My son-in-law Dave has a birthday coming up next week, and he’s getting perilously close to one the Dutch call “Abraham” when you reach it. I won’t say what one that is, but I had mine a long time ago.

We’ve been hanging out with Dave for 30 years now, and during that time he has always impressed me as a steady and solid person. He works hard at his job; he’s a volunteer in community organizations. He’s been a singular husband and father.

On our recent holiday, Dave looked after us when we went into New York on the PATH train. He took us to the Empire State building and a cool donut shop. Then he Teddy and I went to the Intrepid museum. I learned about how to use Lyft, and it worked out great.

He was game to try anything on the ship, including a rock climb with Veronica.

He hasn’t forgotten his past, either. Every year he looks forward to a fun reunion with his Grade 8 colleagues (and teacher) up at a cottage in Haliburton.

As Maria and I get older, Both Dave and Sarah have taken the burden of planning and travel off our shoulders and it is deeply appreciated. We still get to come along and have fun with our grandchildren – and that is a blessing.

So once again this year Dave, we wish you a happy birthday and we hope to be around to celebrate “Abraham” and many more with you.
